Wendy Dolan - March 2014

Wendy Dolan was the guest speaker for our March meeting on Monday.  She is a well known textile artist who has been designing beautiful pieces of artwork for over 30 years.

Wendy was extremely generous telling us about the materials and the techniques she uses.  She loves textures and combines natural fabrics by layering them, then painting with a thick pigment screen printing paint and then free machining and hand stitching.
Wendy loves landscapes, flowers and trees but also uses architectural designs which she has seen on her travels or in the local area.
She has had several major commissions, two of which were single piece drop down curtains for a theatre on cruise liners.
Jointly with textile artist Jae Maries, Wendy designed and created a large wall hanging for Ashridge, a management development centre near Berkhampstead.  The hanging was called "Aspiring arches" and the inspiration for the work came from the building itself and various snippets of information they found in their research.  They were asked to involve members of staff so they had to arrange workshops to help people create individual motifs for a border.  They limited themselves to seven colours which were taken from a stain glass window and a carpet in the entrance hall.
Thank you Wendy for a most enjoyable and informative afternoon.

The next meeting of the Guild will be on Monday 7 April when a Ploughman’s lunch, starting at 12.30 for 13.00, will be followed by demonstrations of techniques and machines.  Members work will be on display.  All are welcome but if you require a lunch or further details please contact 01249 750865 or visit our website: https://www.marlboroughembroiderers.org
