Gold work workshop with Robina Orchard - April 2015

On Monday 20 April, a bright sunny day, nine members attended a workshop learning Gold Work techniques from member Robina Orchard. We started by drawing a simple design and preparing the fabric. Then using the pack of specialist threads, supplied by Robina, we started on the first technique. Gold work is not a process to be rushed at but is intricate and precise. The room was soon hushed by the concentration required to master our first attempts.

Robina had brought along samples of her work and demonstrated several stitches, explaining about the various threads (purls, jap, twists, plate etc.) and the effects which could be achieved. In addition to the specific gold work stitches, which in the main are couching and filling stitches, small pieces of leather or lurex can be incorporated, areas can be raised by using padding as in trapunto. Beads, sequins and embroidery stitches can also be used to enhance the piece.

All in all a pleasant day spent learning a new technique and despite the lovely weather outside it was good to spend a few hours just "sitting and stitching". Thanks to Robina for sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for this particular style of textile work.

Yesterday we all tucked into a delicious ham and cheese Ploughman’s lunch which was organised by the Committee.  Members arrive ready to enjoy the event so we thought you might like to see some fun photos taken beforehand.

Ann K demonstrated the over-locker machine and the embellisher and smocking machine were also on display.  Recent work by Chris Cook’s Design to Stitch students proved very popular as did the folders and papers made at Lynda Monk’s recent workshop.

After lunch Ann Smith, who is leading the Ruby Anniversary Exhibition Committee, explained details of the Chairman’s Challenge for next year's exhibition and encouraged all members to make a 10 x 10 inch entry in red, red, red.
See details below.

Over £80 was raised towards our 2016 Ruby Anniversary Exhibition from a “bring and buy” table and the lucky winners of the raffle took away the pot plant decorations.
