Exploring Velvet - Angie Hughes

7/11/2012

On Tuesday, the day after her talk, Angie Hughes organised a one day workshop entitled "Exploring Velvet".  Sixteen of us had a fun day learning various techniques Angie uses when working with velvet as a background.  The materials we used included dynaflow paints, Quink ink, acrylic paints, bleach, transfoils and glitter to add the sparkle.  Some of us made printing blocks and some used stencils to create their designs.  In the morning we all managed to produce a wonderfully individual background starting with a piece of white cotton velvet.  It was amazing to see the end results - each one was completely unique.  In the afternoon Angie got her Bernina out, placed a piece of organza on top of the velvet and demonstrated the next stage of adding the free machine embroidery.  What a fun day it was and a very big "thank you" to Angie for being so well organised and for being so generous with her techniques.  I just wish it could have been a two day workshop and then we could have completed the project.

What good girls you are with your disposable gloves on!
Angie adding some glitter to her work
Pay attention girls, this is how it is done!
Ah, that is how she did it!
Show and tell!
We all started with a piece of white cotton velvet and just look at the results!
Make sure you finish your work ready for the "Show & tell" in January!

New Works for Old - Angie Hughes

Angie Hughes gave us an  entertaining and informative talk on New Works for Old at the November meeting of the Guild.
Angie used her handmade books and shimmering samples to demonstrate and  discuss the techniques of her work, explaining how they are inspired by poetry,  text, the natural world and plant forms.  During her talk Angie passed around her work for members to examine more closely and was very generous with her knowledge on their construction.

Thanks Angie.  Hope to meet you again one day!
